Nick Saban wasn't always a coaching legend he actually earned a college degree. He attended Kent State University in Ohio. Although he initially played defensive back in college he didn't always see coaching in his future. It was his college coach Don James who convinced him to give it a shot. After graduating with a bachelor's degree in business in 1973 Saban's path took a turn towards coaching and the rest as they say is history.

Nick Saban wasn't always destined to coach football. After college, he almost went into car sales but his coach convinced him to be an assistant coach in 1973. He bounced around different teams for years including the NFL's Houston Oilers.In 1989 he got his first head coaching job at the University of Toledo. They had a great season He then went back to the NFL for a bit before becoming head coach at Michigan State. There, he led them to some big wins from 2000 to 2004 Saban coached LSU and won a national championship He even wrote some coaching books during this time. In 2005 he tried the NFL again with the Miami Dolphins but it was not a good fit. Finally in 2007 he landed the head coach job at Alabama where he became a college football legend.
Under Saban's leadership, several players, including Mark Ingram Jr., Derrick Henry, DeVonta Smith, and Bryce Young, have received recognition such as the Heisman Trophy—an achievement unprecedented for Alabama players before Saban's tenure. Moreover, 71 players have been awarded the annual honor of First Team All-Americans, and 113 former players from his team have been drafted into the National Football League.
Nick Saban earned the Paul Bear Bryant Award twice first in 2003 and then again in 2020. In addition to this prestigious recognition he received the Walter Camp Coach of the Year award in both 2008 and 2018. He was honored twice with the AP College Football Coach of the Year award in 2003 and 2008, and the Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year award in those same years. Additionally his exceptional coaching efforts have resulted in him being recognized with the SEC Coach of the Year award five times in 2003, 2008, 2009, 2016, and 2020.
